AMA Recap: Ahmed Mirza
Check out the AMA with the Investor at Techstars LA
Spotlight on Ahmed Mirza
Hey everyone! We recently hosted an insightful AMA with Ahmed Mirza, a founder turned investor who leads the Los Angeles, Space Tech, and Healthcare accelerator programs at Techstars.
Ahmed shared his journey into the venture space, discussed the challenges he’s faced, and explained how his entrepreneurial background helps him evaluate startups across various industries. He also provided practical advice for new entrepreneurs, covering topics like fundraising tips, identifying worthwhile problems, and building a founding team.
Check out some highlights below, and as always, you can find the full AMA content here.

"Go where your curiosity takes you. Be open to different ideas, but really focus on real problems. The popular public advice is follow your passion. And I personally think that's a bunch of BS. Passion will run out. I think what's more important is your curiosity about a problem and really trying to innately understand what that problem is and all of the inputs and outputs of a problem."
⭐ Highlights from Ahmed Mirza’s AMA (edited for clarity)
Is an accelerator for anyone? Who is most suited for an accelerator program?
Accelerators like Techstars are best suited for companies with steady revenue and a market-ready product, aiming to scale. They aren't ideal for idea-stage ventures. Founders at an earlier stage should bootstrap until they are ready for growth and can benefit from the network and business development support accelerators provide.
What are the main attributes you look at when evaluating a company?
The primary attributes are the founders' credibility, their fit with the market, and their openness to coaching and mentorship. At the pre-seed stage, the team's ability to address and validate the problem is crucial. Personal readiness to engage in mentorship and handle challenges is also vital.
Do you believe having co-founders is essential for a startup?
Most investors prefer two or three founders, as the journey requires balancing multiple responsibilities like product development, sales, and customer engagement. A single founder is typically a red flag unless they're a seasoned entrepreneur with an experienced executive team. Ultimately, whether you have one or multiple founders, the key is to be clear about your goals, confident in your vision, and adept at leveraging the right resources and talent.
How should founders approach finding the right investor-founder fit?
Old advice suggested raising as much money as possible from any source, but that's outdated. At early stages, it's crucial to find investors who act as partners, truly believe in your vision, and trust you as the right person for the company. When asked "why now," founders should address why this company, team, and timing matter. Similarly, ask investors why they're the right fit at this time with this capital. Avoid rushing to sign the first term sheet; building a company is a long-term endeavor, so find investors who will provide genuine support and advice.
What advice do you have for someone considering a career in venture investing?
To stand out in venture investing, be known for a specific expertise or "superpower." Many aspiring VCs are smart and offer value, but having a unique insight or specialty sets you apart. For example, my focus is on storytelling and pitch decks, a skill honed through experience and study. Identify and embody your own strength to make a meaningful impact in the field.
